As I settled into my morning routine a little over 6 years ago, I decided to switch things up a bit and try a new podcast.
I scrolled through the options and somehow landed on the Joe Rogan Experience.
Immediately, I was amazed at how Rogan was able to guide the conversation in a way that allowed his quest to share their expertise and insights, while also engaging with them in a critical and thought-provoking way.

For those unfamiliar with the podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience is a long-form interview show hosted by comedian and UFC commentator Joe Rogan.
With over 1,500 episodes and counting, the show features a wide range of guests from all walks of life, including scientists, politicians, comedians, and musicians.
When listening to the JRE podcast, one will encounter a diverse range of topics and guests, some of which may be controversial or challenging to one’s own beliefs or values.
The foundation of understanding that was established through my introductory episodes to the JRE podcast was an important and integral part of enduring some of the more personally triggering episodes.

Pressure, and Underperformance
by Jason Selk
Most offensive of them all, but frequent guest of the show, Andrew Shultz is a good example of this.
That’s why having a solid understanding of the podcast’s format, Joe as a host, and the level of people and intelligence he engages with, provides a framework for approaching these challenging episodes and guests.
And with this foundation in place, it becomes easier to appreciate the diverse perspectives and ideas presented on the show, even if they may not align with one’s own beliefs or values.

Instead of immediately dismissing or attacking the guest ideas, listeners should approach the conversation with an open mind and allow room to understand the guest’s perspective.
This will lead to a more productive learning and a deeper understanding of complex issues.
With that being said, what really sets Joes show apart from others is his ability to engage with his guests in a thoughtful and curious way, and that allows for the uniquely deep exploration of topics that only his podcast provides.
While I certainly do not agree with everything that has been discussed on the show, I can appreciate the thoughtfulness and curiosity that Rogan brings to each conversation.

Because it’s not just the impressive roster of guests that makes the Joe Rogan Experience so unique.
It’s the way that Joe approaches each conversation with curiosity, humor, and open-mindedness.
He tackles tough topics and controversial issues often with nuance and thoughtfulness, making for some truly enlightening and entertaining conversations.
His ability to make complex ideas and concepts accessible to the masses is a true art form.

That’s why I’ve decided to embark on a journey back through the Joe Rogan Experience, analyzing each episode from a personal and cultural perspective.
Through this series, I’ll share my personal experiences as a black man listening to the show, provide insights into Joe’s unique style, and explore why he’s been able to build such a devoted and engaged audience from all walks of life.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the show or a newcomer looking to discover something new, I hope you’ll join me on this dark and twisted ride through the Joe Rogan Experience.
Let’s dive in and see what we learn together.
